found the cause: the bootstrap css crashes on sass 3.1 (version on debian), but not on the latest sass version (3.4). this was tested using sass 3.4 on cirandas and serpro.

i saw the latest bootstrap code (3.3) and it doesn't have this problem, will try an upgrade.
