I don't this was a revert. This filename shorten code is quite old, I see you did a small change to it, but still was basically the same action of shortening filenames. Also, this MR is quite older than your changes, and there was no feedback on it.
Today we have ellipsis using CSS and quite big resolutions, so shortening filenames is not necessary anymore, IMO.
